Performance guide

How to measure FPS before and after a change.

A setting can be applied correctly without making a game faster. Compare two captures under similar conditions before deciding whether a change helped your PC.

Keep the test comparable

Choose a scene you can revisit, such as the same in-game benchmark or a repeatable route. Keep the game resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, and power mode the same. Avoid downloads or other changing background workloads during both captures. If the scene or settings change, start a fresh comparison.

Capture a baseline

  1. Open the game, then select Optimize My FPS in FixMyFPS.
  2. Return to the game and play the chosen scene for 30 seconds. The app allows a short warm-up and pauses the capture while the game is out of focus.
  3. Review the baseline and any missing measurements before applying changes. An unavailable FPS capture does not establish a starting point.

Repeat after the change

Review the suggested actions and choose what to apply. If you use Prioritize your game, select the background apps yourself; the app reduces their CPU priority only while the selected game has focus. Return to the same scene for another 30 seconds with the same graphics settings. FixMyFPS then shows the before and after measurements when both captures are complete and comparable.

Read the result

FixMyFPS calculates 1% low from the mean frame time of the slowest 1% of valid frames. It does not promise that every game will gain FPS. If the result says Game settings verified, the selected settings were checked; that message alone is not a measured performance gain. If either capture is missing or incomplete, do not treat the settings result as an FPS comparison.

When the numbers are close

Run the same test again and compare the spread of results before attributing a small difference to the change. FixMyFPS shows a baseline and an after capture; it does not calculate a repeated-run average for you. If performance is unchanged, keep only changes that are useful for another reason or use Undo to restore supported settings. Closing an app is separate and cannot be undone by FixMyFPS.
